HKUST(GZ) Outstanding Teaching Award
The Outstanding Teaching Award at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) is established to recognize on an annual basis a distinguished member of the academic staff who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and learning practices within our academic community. It signifies the importance that the University places on the pursuit of teaching excellence and the enhancement of student learning experience.
This is a named award, with the name to be announced in a later stage. It is presented each year at the University Graduation Ceremony to a member of the academic staff who best exemplifies continued pursuit of excellence, devotion to teaching, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. The recipient is representative of the high quality of teaching and learning that the University offers and promotes.
In 2025, the Award will be presented at the Graduation Ceremony on 25 October. The Awardee will receive a medal, a certificate and RMB 200,000 (before tax, in cash and in kind).
Eligibility
For consideration of the Award, a nominee must be a full-time staff member who
(i) is on regular substantiation-track or teaching-track (as opposed to visiting) appointment,
(ii) has completed a minimum of 2 years of service at HKUST(GZ) by the time of nomination, and
(iii) has primary responsibility for teaching an undergraduate or postgraduate course, which may be a language course.
Nomination Procedures
A nomination must be submitted jointly by at least five members of the University community, including at least one faculty member other than the nominee, and two students.
Nominators are requested to submit the following documents in PDF form to the respective Hubs/Colleges/EECCS by email by 24 July 2025:
(i) Nomination Form (pdf/doc) (Part 1)
(ii) Statement(s) from nominators in support of the nomination – max 5 pages
(iii) Nominee’s consent for being nominated as part of Nomination Form (Part 1)
(iv) Teaching philosophy, achievements in teaching and other evidence for consideration (Nomination Form, Part 2) – to be provided by the nominee, and may either be submitted through the nominators together with (i) – (iii)above, or submitted separately to the respective Hub/College/EECCS directly by the nominee. Selection Process
Hubs, CES, CFT and EECCS will each form a Vetting Committee to evaluate the nominations received.
Each of the Hubs, Colleges and EECCS will recommend one nominee to the University-level Selection Committee (the Selection Committee) by 22 August for further consideration. This committee, chaired by a Vice-President assigned by the President, will have one member each from Hubs, CES, CFT and EECCS, one undergraduate student representative and one postgraduate student representative.
The shortlisted nominees will be invited by the Selection Committee to attend an interview.
Upon completion of the selection process, the Selection Committee will recommend one nominee for approval of the President.
Award Presentation
The award will be presented to the recipient during the Graduation Ceremony on 25 October 2025.
